Why Fire Stations Need Professional Exhaust Extraction

Diesel engine exhaust is classified as carcinogenic and repeated exposure in closed bays significantly increases the long-term health risk for firefighters. A source-capture exhaust extraction system at the tailpipe is the most effective way to keep these fumes out of the station air and protect your crew during daily operations. Even modern engines meeting EURO 5 and EURO 6 standards still emit harmful pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon oxides (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), and particulate matter (PM). These pollutants can accumulate in enclosed vehicle halls and pose health risks to firefighters.

Rails and profiles in fire station systems

The rail extractors for fire and emergency service stations are based on rail channels and profiles made of aluminium and constitute a rigid supporting beam of the system on which the trolley, extraction hose, nozzle and other equipment elements of the system.

Aluminium rail channels and profiles are available in the three variants of mounting the nozzle to the vehicle’s exhaust pipe.

ALU extraction rail

A self-sealing aluminium extraction channel with external rails provides a track for the extraction trolley.

TECHNORAIL extraction rail

A self-sealing aluminium extraction channel with external rails provides a track for the extraction trolley.

EMS track system

The aluminium profile is a running track for trolleys and other extractor components.

Fire station bays can quickly fill with diesel exhaust containing CO, NOx, and carcinogenic particles. A dedicated exhaust extraction system captures fumes directly at the tailpipe and removes them outside, protecting firefighters’ health and supporting occupational safety compliance.

An aluminium rail with a trolley, hose, and nozzle is installed along the vehicle’s parking and driving path. While the engine runs, the nozzle captures exhaust at the source and follows the vehicle. At the exit, the system disconnects automatically and returns to its parking position.

Smaller stations typically need a single rail with one trolley, while larger or drive-through stations benefit from longer rails and multiple trolleys. NORFI customises each system based on your bay layout and vehicle fleet.

The system is designed for standard fire station bays and mounts to ceilings or beams without obstructing vehicles or doors. NORFI reviews bay dimensions during design to ensure safe clearances and minimal building modification.

Most systems serving one to four vehicles are installed within a few working days. Installation is planned around your duty schedule so stations can usually remain operational.

Routine visual checks of hoses, rails, and nozzles are usually sufficient. Periodic inspections of fans and safety components are carried out according to recommended service intervals.

Yes. By capturing exhaust at the source, the system supports compliance with workplace exposure limits. NORFI solutions are designed in line with relevant European directives and ventilation standards.

Yes. The modular design allows installation in existing buildings without major rebuilding, and different nozzle types accommodate various vehicle exhaust configurations.

Costs depend on station size, number of vehicles, rail length, and automation level. NORFI provides a tailored concept and quotation after reviewing your building and fleet data.
